Do I need a South facing roof to have solar panels installed

Do I need a South facing roof to have solar panels fitted ?
This is a question we get asked the most.” Do we need a South facing roof to have panels fitted” ?
The answer is NO. We can install PV solar enrgy panels to properties that are South East – South West facing. Of course it helps if you are 100% South facing but it’s not the end of the world.
In fact I would say that the majority of solar panel installations across Britain are not 100% South facing.
Free solar panels….Beware !
It is a miss conception that your property has to be 100 % South facing. This miss conception has been born from companies who install free panels.
These companies will tell you that ” You have to have a 100 % South facing roof for solar panel installations to work” This is total rubbish……
The companies who give away their panels for free are after one thing Profit, Profit Profit. Yes you will receive some free electricity from your free solar panels but all the financial benefits you would normally receive from the governments Feed In Tariff goes directly to the company who has installed your free solar panels.
These companies have strict rules or criteria when it comes to fitting free solar panels. They want to maximize their profits by only fitting free solar panels to roofs where they can fit at least 18 panels on roofs that are 100% South facing.
If you fall into this category and decide to have free solar panels installed on your roof please remember that you will have to sign a contract between you and the solar panel company to lease your roof to them for the next 25 years. You then become a tenant of your own roof / property.

This is a great post. I was told by a company near Barnsley / Tankersley who install free solar panels, that my property wasn’t south facing so it wasn’t possible to have them fitted.
If what you are saying is correct I would like you to come and have a look at my property.
Thanks J.Hill

I have also been told by A Shade Greener and Ecovision, that my property isn’t suitable for solar panels, one due to it not being south facing and the other stating our roof isn’t big enough because they only fit between 14 and 18 panels.

That’s right, this is the most common response from the free solar panel companies as they will not be able to receive a large enough amount through the feed in tariff to make it viable to them, but if you were to buy your own panels you could have as many solar panels as your roof will fit and keep the feed in tariff for your self. Even off 12 panels you could pocket around £1000 per year (tax free).:)
